Samsung HPR4272 - playing DVDs in 16:9

Hey, I’m new, just bought my sammy.  I have a question/concern though.  I was under the impression that because my tv is a widescreen, when I rent movies that are in 16:9 format on the back of the box, when I play the movie in my DVD player it should then fill the whole screen.  It doesn’t though, the image still has those two black lines like on regulart 4:3 tvs on the top and bottom.  Do I need a upconverting DVD player or some sort of separate upconverter for watching these?  I feel kinda ripped off after putting out that much money and not getting the full view of the 42″ screen.  Please let me know guys!.. Also, can anyone give me an idea of the prime settings for the video setup (ie contrast, sharpness etc)

  1. Unless your DVD player is HD you won’t be able to fill the screen.

My DTV player is 480P and have the same problem. When I watch a HD programin 720P or 1080I, the lines dissapear.

  2. If the lines are on the top and bottom that is normal. A lot of movies are in “Anamorphic Widescreen” which is 2.35 to 1. Regular widescreen is 1.85 to 1 and will fill your screen perfectly. Check for that on the DVD case. As long as you don’t have bars on the sides you’re fine. As far as setup - it’s all personal preference.
